Frequently Asked Questions about the Transition

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MANDATE

You could lose your television signal in 2009!

Here’s all you need to know:

What is Digital Television? (DTV)

If you watch television using an outside antenna or “rabbit ears” inside, you’re watching Analog television and you have an important decision to make.  Analog is the way television signals have been beamed into homes since 1939.  Digital Television will give you a much sharper picture and more choices of channels.

Why are we switching to DTV?

The federal government mandates that all Analog signals be turned off on February 17, 2009.  At that point, digital signals will be sent out, giving you a clearer picture and many more options for multiple channels to watch. It’s basically, “out with the old way of watching television, and in with the new!”

Will I need a new TV?

Your current television could still work if you either purchase a set-top converter box, or subscribe to cable or satellite TV service.

How do I get a set-top converter box?

In early 2008, set-top converter boxes will be available at several local retailers throughout South Texas.  You can even request 2 coupons to help you pay for the converter box.

Is HDTV the same as DTV?

No.  HDTV is the highest quality of DTV.  DTV is still much better than analog, and HDTV is even better.

What do DTV sets look like and what will they cost?

Most DTV sets have bigger, wider screens, much like movie screens.
Nearly all sets in your local retail store are now digital sets. Prices have been dropping and should continue to drop over the next several years.

Do I already have DTV via digital cable or satellite?

You may have DTV if you subscribe to the digital package on cable or satellite.  But you will only be able to see true DTV once you have purchased a new DTV set.  If you keep your old analog set and buy a converter box, you won’t be receiving “true” Digital pictures.

What about my VCR, DVD player and camcorder?  Will I be able to use them with a new DTV set?

Your old analog equipment will work on your new DTV set, however you will only receive the same quality picture you currently receive.

Bottom line:  How do I get DTV?

You can either buy a new DTV Television set, or keep your current analog set and buy a converter box, or subscribe to digital cable or satellite.  If you already subscribe to cable or satellite, just ask your provider if you already have a digital box or will need a new one.
